THE SYMBOLS OF APPROACHING JUDGMENT (7:1–9:10)

The Plague of Locusts

7:1 Thus hath Adonay (אדני) YHWH (יהוה) shewed unto me; and, Hinnei, he formed locusts in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, Behold, [it was] the latter growth after the king's mowings.

7:2 And it came to pass, [that] when they had made an end of eating the grass of the Eretz, then I said, O Adonay (אדני) YHWH (יהוה), forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Yaakov (יעקב) arise? for he [is] small.

7:3 YHWH (יהוה) repented for this: It shall not be, saith YHWH (יהוה).

The Devouring Fire

7:4 Thus hath Adonay (אדני) YHWH (יהוה) shewed unto me: and, Hinnei, Adonay (אדני) YHWH (יהוה) called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part.

7:5 Then said I, O Adonay (אדני) YHWH (יהוה), cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Yaakov (יעקב) arise? for he [is] small.

7:6 YHWH (יהוה) repented for this: This also shall not be, saith Adonay (אדני) YHWH (יהוה).

The Plumb line

7:7 Thus he shewed me: and, Hinnei, Adonay (אדני) stood upon a wall [made] by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.

7:8 And YHWH (יהוה) said unto me, Amos (עמוס), what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said Adonay (אדני), Hinnei, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Yisrael: I will not again pass by them any more:

7:9 And the high places of Yitzchak shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Yisrael (ישׂרא) shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the Bayit Yarov' am (ירבעם) with the sword.

7:10 Then Amatzyah ha Kohen of Beit El sent to Yarov' am (ירבעם) melek Yisrael, saying, Amos (עמוס) hath conspired against thee in the midst of the Bayit Yisrael: the Eretz is not able to bear all his words.

7:11 For thus Amos (עמוס) saith, Yarov' am (ירבעם) shall die by the sword, and Yisrael (ישׂרא) shall surely be led away captive out of their own Eretz.

7:12 Also Amatzyah said unto Amos (עמוס), O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the Eretz of Yehudah (יהוּד), and there eat bread, and prophesy there:

7:13 But prophesy not again any more at Beit El: for it [is] the king's chapel, and it [is] the king's court.

7:14 Then answered Amos (עמוס), and said to Amatzyah, I [was] no Navi, neither [was] I a Navi's son; but I [was] an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:

7:15 And YHWH (יהוה) took me as I followed the flock, and YHWH (יהוה) said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Yisrael.

7:16 Now therefore hear thou the Dvar YHWH (יהוה): Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Yisrael, and drop not [thy word] against the Bayit Yitzchak.

7:17 Therefore thus saith YHWH (יהוה); Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy banim and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy Eretz shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted Eretz: and Yisrael (ישׂרא) shall surely go into golus forth of his Eretz.
