12:1(i)

Now YHWH (יהוה) had said unto Avram:

Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy Beit Avicha, unto a land that I will shew thee:

12:2 And

bullet05_fire.gif I will make of thee a great nation, and

bullet05_fire.gif I will bless thee, and

bullet05_fire.gif make thy name great; and

bullet05_fire.gifthou shalt be a blessing:

12:3 And

bullet05_fire.gifI will bless them that bless thee, and

curse him that curseth thee: and

in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

12:4 So Avram departed, as YHWH (יהוה) had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Avram [was] seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.

12:5 And Avram took Sarai (שׂרי) his wife, and Lot his nephew , and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Kenaan; and into the land of Kenaan they came.

12:6 And Avram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Kenaanite [was] then in the land.

12:7 And YHWH (יהוה) appeared unto Avram, and said: Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto YHWH (יהוה), who appeared unto him.

12:8 And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Beit'el, and pitched his tent, [having] Beit'el on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto YHWH (יהוה), and called upon the Name of YHWH (יהוה).

12:9 And Avram journeyed, going on still toward the south.

12:10 And there was a famine in the land: and Avram went down into Mitzrayim to sojourn there; for the famine [was] grievous in the land.

12:11 And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Mitzrayim, that he said unto Sarai (שׂרי) his wife:

"Hinnei, I know that thou art a woman of beautiful countenance:"

12:12 Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Mitzrites shall see thee, that they shall say:

" This [is] his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive."

12:13 Say, I pray thee, thou [art] my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee.

12:14 (ii)

And it came to pass, that, when Avram was come into Mitzrayim, the Mitzrites beheld the woman that she [was] very beautiful.

12:15 The princes also of Paroh saw her, and commended her before Paroh: and the woman was taken into Paroh's house.

12:16 And he entreated Avram well for her sake: and he had sheep, and oxen, and male donkeys, and menservants, and maidservants, and female donkeys, and camels.

12:17 And YHWH (יהוה) plagued Paroh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai (שׂרי) Avram's wife.

12:18 And Paroh called Avram, and said:

What [is] this [that] thou hast done unto me?

Why didst thou not tell me that she [was] thy wife?

12:19 Why saidst thou, She [is] my sister?

So I might have taken her to me to wife:

Now therefore hinnei thy wife, take [her], and go thy way.

12:20 And Paroh commanded [his] men concerning him: and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had.

"Lekh Lekha" --"Go for yourself". Rashi comments: "For your benefit." "suit yourself" In the last of the ten tests Hashem again commands "And go for yourself to the land of Moriah." Hashem's message to Abraham is that He has no doubts as to the outcome of the trial. The trial is needed for the benefit of the human being. From this Chapter Avraham was first to be call Hebrew the cross over one. Abraham in Egypt foreshadows the slavery of the Jews.

Avraham's biographic are:

1. His call by Hashem in Aram Naharayim (Acts7:2, 3).

2. His journey to Haran, then to Kenaan (Acts 7: 4).

3. Hashem's promise of the land to Avraham, though the patriarch himself was not given any of it—as was proved by his purchase of the cave of Machpelah as a burial place (v. 5). The fulfillment of that promise is still future (Hebrews 11:13-40).

4. Hashem's prediction of Yisrael's bondage in Mitzrayim and of eventual deliverance (vv. 6, 7). Both parts of this prediction were accomplished by men who had been rejected by the nation: Yosef (vv. 9-19); Moshe (vv. 20-36). The four hundred years mentioned in verse 6 and in Beresheet 15:13 refer to the time when the Jewish people were afflicted in Mitzrayim. The four hundred and thirty years cited in Shemot 12:40 and Galates 3:17 cover the period from the arrival of Ya'akov and his family in Mitzrayim to the Exodus and the giving of the Torah. The Yisraelites were not persecuted during their first thirty years in Mitzrayim; in fact, they were treated quite royally.

Even ye Avraham believed Elohim, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Avraham. and the Scripture foreseeing that Elohim would justify the goyim through faith, proclaimed the goodnews unto Avraham saying "In thee all nations be blessed" So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Avraham Galatians 3:6-8
