Rechav'am forbidden by Hashem to attack Yarov'am, fortifies Yehudah

(1 Kings 12:21-24)

11:1 And when Rechav'am  (רחבעם) was come to Yerushalayim, he gathered of Beit Yehudah and Benyamin a hundred and 80,000 chosen [men], which were warriors, to fight against Yisra'el, that he might bring the malkut again to Rechav'am  (רחבעם).

11:2 But Dvar YHWH (יהוה) came to Shemayah the man of Elohim (אלהים), saying:

11:3 Speak unto Rechav'am  (רחבעם) Ben Sh'lomo (שׁלמה), melekh Yehudah, and to all Yisra'el in Yehudah and Benyamin, saying,

11:4 Thus saith YHWH (יהוה):

"Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren: return every man to his beit: for this thing is done of me. And they obeyed divrei YHWH (יהוה), and returned from going against Yarov’am.

11:5 And Rechav'am  (רחבעם) dwelt in Yerushalayim, and built cities for defence in Yehudah.

11:6 He built even Beit Lechem, and Etam, and Tekoa,

11:7 And Beit Tzur, and Socho, and Adullam,

11:8 And Gat, and Mareshah, and Zif,

11:9 And Adorayim, and Lakhish, and Azekah,

11:10 And Tzorah, and Ayalon, and Hevron, which [are] in Yehudah and in Benyamin fenced cities.

11:11 And he fortified the strong holds, and put captains in them, and store of victual, and of oil and wine.

11:12 And in every several city [he put] shields and spears, and made them exceeding strong, having Yehudah and Benyamin on his side.

11:13 And the Kohanim and the Leviim that [were] in all Yisra'el resorted to him out of all their coasts.

11:14 For the Leviim left their suburbs and their possession, and came to Yehudah and Yerushalayim: for Yarov’am and his banim had cast them off from executing the kohen's office unto YHWH (יהוה):

11:15 And he ordained him Kohanim for the bamot (high places), and for the satyrs (devils), and for the calves which he had made.

11:16 And after them out of all the tribes of Yisra'el such as set their hearts to seek YHWH (יהוה) Elohim (אלהים) of Yisra'el came to Yerushalayim, to zevach (sacrifice) unto YHWH (יהוה) Elohim (אלהים) Avotei.

11:17 So they strengthened the malkut of Yehudah, and made Rechav'am  (רחבעם) Ben Sh'lomo (שׁלמה) strong, three years: for three years they walked in the way of David and Sh'lomo (שׁלמה).

11:18 And Rechav'am  (רחבעם) took him Mahalath BatYerimoth Ben David to wife, [and] Avihail Bat Eliav Ben Yishai;

11:19 Which bare him children; Yeush, and Shamaryah, and Zaham.

11:20 And after her he took Maachah Bat Avshalom; which bare him Aviyah, and Attai, and Ziza, and Shelomith.

11:21 And Rechav'am  (רחבעם) loved Maachah Bat Avshalom above all his wives and his concubines: (for he took eighteen wives, and threescore concubines; and begat twenty and eight banim, and threescore daughters.)

11:22 And Rechav'am  (רחבעם) made Aviyah Ben Maachah the chief, [to be] ruler among his brethren: for [he thought] to make him melekh.

11:23 And he dealt wisely, and dispersed of all his children throughout all the countries of Yehudah and Benyamin, unto every fenced city: and he gave them victual in abundance. And he desired many wives.
