The Divisions of the Leviim
23:1 So when Davyid was old and full of days, he made Sh'lomo (שׁלמה) beno king over Yisrael.
23:2 And he gathered together all the Sarei Yisrael, with the Kohanim and the Leviim.
23:3 Now the Leviim were numbered from the age of thirty years and upward: and their number by their polls, man by man, was thirty and eight thousand.
23:4 Of which, twenty and four thousand [were] to set forward the work of the Beit YHWH (יהוה); and six thousand [were] officers and judges:
23:5 Moreover four thousand [were] sho'arim (gatekeepers); and four thousand praised YHWH (יהוה) with the instruments which I made, [said Davyid], to praise [therewith].
23:6 And Davyid divided them into courses among Benai Levi, [namely], Gershon, Kohat, and Merari.
23:7 Of the Gershonites [were], Laadan, and Shimei.
23:8 Benai Laadan; the chief [was] Yehi'el, and Zetam, and Yo'el, three.
23:9 Benai Shimei; Shlomit, and Haziel, and Haran, three. These [were] the sarei ha'avot of Laadan.
23:10 And Benai Shimei [were], Yahat, Zina, and Yeush, and Beryah. These four [were] Benai Shimei.
23:11 And Yahath was the chief, and Zizah the second: but Yeush and Beryah had not many banim; therefore they were in one reckoning, according to [their] father's house.
23:12 Benai Kohat; Amram, Yitzar, Chevron, and Uzziel, four.
23:13 Benai Amram; Aharon and Mosheh: and Aharon was separated, that he should sanctify the most Set apart things, he and his banim for ever, to burn incense before YHWH (יהוה), to minister unto him, and to bless in his name for ever.
23:14 Now [concerning] Mosheh the man of Elohim (אלהים), his banim were named of the shevet (tribe) of Levi.
23:15 Benai Mosheh [were], Gershom, and Eliezer.
23:16 Of Benai Gershom, Shevuel [was] the chief.
23:17 And Benai Eliezer [were], Rehabyah the chief. And Eliezer had none other banim; but Benai Rehabyah were very many.
23:18 Of Benai Yitzar; Shlomit the chief.
23:19 Of Benai Chevron; Yeryah the first, Amaryah the second, Yahaziel the third, and Yekameam the fourth.
23:20 Of Benai Uzziel; Michah the first, and Yesyah the second.
23:21 Benai Merari; Mahli, and Mushi. Benai Mahli; Eli'ezer, and Kish.
23:22 And Eli'ezer died, and had no banim, but daughters: and their achim Benai Kish took them.
23:23 Benai Mushi; Mahli, and Eder, and Yeremoth, three.
23:24 These [were] Benai Levi after the Beit their fathers; [even] the sarei ha'avot, as they were counted by number of names by their polls, that did the work for the avodah (service) of the Beit YHWH (יהוה), from the age of twenty years and upward.
23:25 For Davyid said, The YHWH (יהוה) Elohim (אלהים) of Yisrael hath given rest unto his people, that they may dwell in Yerushalayim for ever:
23:26 And also unto the Leviim; they shall no [more] carry the tabernacle, nor any vessels of it for the avodah (service) thereof.
23:27 For by the last Devarim of Davyid the Leviim [were] numbered from twenty years old and above:
23:28 Because their office [was] to wait on Benai Aharon for the avodah (service) of the Beit YHWH (יהוה), in the courts, and in the chambers, and in the purifying of all Set apart things, and the work of the avodah (service) of the Beit Elohim (אלהים);
23:29 Both for the shewbread, and for the fine flour for meat offering, and for the unleavened cakes, and for [that which is baked in] the pan, and for that which is fried, and for all manner of measure and size;
23:30 And to stand every morning to thank and praise YHWH (יהוה), and likewise at even;
23:31 And to offer all burnt zevakhim (sacrifices) unto YHWH (יהוה) in the sabbaths, in the new moons, and on the set feasts, by number, according to the order commanded unto them, continually before YHWH (יהוה):
23:32 And that they should keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the charge of the Set apart [place], and the charge of Benai Aharon their achim, in the avodah (service) of the Beit YHWH (יהוה).
