For the leader; with stringed instruments. A Psalm of David.

An evening Prayer - Maariv

4:1 Lamnatzeakh binginot mizmor leDavid

(4:2) Answer me when I call, O Elohei (אלהי) of my tzedakah: You have set me free in my distress; be gracious to me and hear my prayer.

4:2 (4:3) O ye sons of men, how long will you turn my glory into shame? How long will you love what is worthless and aim at my deception? Selah.

4:3 (4:4) Udeu ki-hiplah YEHOVAH chasid lo YEHOVAH yishma bekari elav:

But know that YEHOVAH (יהוה) has set apart the chasid (faithful) for Himself: YEHOVAH (יהוה) will hear when I call to him.

4:4 (4:5) (bedtime Shema - to be recite 3 times)

Rigzu veal-techatau imru vilevavkhem al-mishkavkhem vedomu Selah:

Be angry, and do not sin. Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still. Selah.

4:5 (4:6) Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, And put your trust in YEHOVAH (יהוה).

4:6 (4:7)

Rabim omrim mi-yarenu tov nesah-aleinu or paneikha YEHOVAH:

There are many who say, "Who will show us any good?" YEHOVAH, lift up the light of Your countenance upon us.

4:7 (4:8) You have put gladness in my heart, More than in the season that their grain and wine have yielded abundantly.

4:8 (4:9) In peace, will I lay me down and at once sleep; for You YEHOVAH (יהוה) alone will cause me to dwell in safety.

Neginoth

Neginoth: stringed instruments mentioned in connection with Tehillim 3, 5, 43, 54, 60, 66, 75, where it seems clear that the musical directions now appearing as titles of Psalms 4, 6, 54, 55, 61, 67, and 76 were anciently appended to the preceding Tehillim.
