The Future Kavod Yisrael

Seven Portion of Consolation Haftarah reading - Haftarah

 Portion 1 | Portion 2 | Portion 3 | Portion 4 | Portion 5 | Portion 6 | Portion 7 |

60:1 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the kavod YHWH (יהוה) is risen upon thee.

60:2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover the eretz, and gross darkness the people: but YHWH (יהוה) shall arise upon thee, and his kavod shall be seen upon thee.

60:3 And the Goyim shall come to thy light, and melekhim to the brightness of thy rising.

60:4 Lift up thine eyes round about, and see: all they gather themselves together, they come to thee: thy banim shall come from far, and thy banot shall be nursed at [thy] side.

60:5 Then thou shalt see, and flow together, and thine heart shall fear, and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall be converted unto thee, the forces of the Goyim shall come unto thee.

60:6 The multitude of camels shall cover thee, the dromedaries of Midyan and Ephah; all they from Sheva shall come: they shall bring zahav and levonah (frankincense); and they shall shew forth the tehillah YHWH (יהוה).

60:7 All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered together unto thee, the rams of Nevayot shall minister unto thee: they shall come up al ratzon (with acceptance) on mine altar, and I will glorify the bayit of My Tiferet.

60:8 Who [are] these [that] fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their windows?

60:9 Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring thy banim from far, their Kesef (silver) and their Zahav (gold) with them, unto ha Shem YHWH (יהוה) thy Elohim (אלהים), and to the Kadosh Yisrael, because he hath glorified thee.

60:10 And the benai of nekar (strangers) shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee: for in my wrath I smote thee, but in My favour have I had mercy on thee.

60:11 Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that [men] may bring unto thee the forces of the Goyim, and [that] their kings [may be] brought.

60:12 For the goy and Mamlachah that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, [those] goyim shall be utterly wasted.

60:13 The kavod Levanon shall come unto thee, the fir tree, the pine tree, and the box together, to beautify the place of my sanctuary; and I will make the place of my feet glorious.

60:14 The banim also of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee; and all they that despised thee shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet; and they shall call thee, The city of YHWH (יהוה), The Tzyon of the Kadosh Yisrael.

60:15 Whereas thou hast been forsaken and hated, so that no man went through [thee], I will make thee an eternal excellency, a joy of many generations.

60:16 Thou shalt also suck the milk of the Goyim, and shalt suck the breast of kings: and thou shalt know that I YHWH (יהוה) [am] thy Yesha (Moshia) and thy Go'el (Redeemer), the Avir of Yaakov.

60:17 For brass I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring silver, and for wood brass, and for stones iron: I will also make thy pekudim shalom, and thine exactors tzedakah.

60:18 Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Yeshuah, and thy shaar Tehillah.

60:19 The sun shall be no more be your light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light to you:

But YHWH (יהוה) shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy Elohim (אלהים) your glory. Revelation 21:23-24; 22:5

60:20 Your sun shall no longer go down; neither shall your moon withdraw itself:

"For YHWH (יהוה) shall be your everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended."

60:21 Thy people also [shall be] all tzaddikim: they shall inherit the land for ever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified.

60:22 A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation: I YHWH (יהוה) will hasten it in His time.

The temple and the Set Apart city are one and the same; Yochanan mentions these places sequentially. Yochanan clearly relies on Yeshayahu 60:19 (compare Yeshayahu 24:23), which he freely adapts.

Yeshayahu 60:19-20

Revelation 21-23-24

The sun will no more be your light by day,

And the city did not need the sun

neither will the brightness of the moon shine on you,

or the moon to illumine it,

For YHWH will be your everlasting light,

for the glory of Elohim illumines it

and your Elohim will be your glory.

and the Lamb is its lamp.

Yeshayahu writes his prophecy in the context of “the City of YHWH, Tzyon of the SET APART One of Yisrael” (Yeshayahu 60:14), and Yochanan writes his words following the description of the new Yerushalayim. Yochanan turns Yeshayahu's clause “your Elohim will be your glory” into a messianic fulfillment “the Lamb is its lamp.” YHWH ELOHIM and the LAMB share the same glory (see Yochanan 1:14), for here the LAMB is the source of light and in Revelation 22:5 it is Elohim himself.
