Yehoyakim burns Yirmeyahu's sefer
36:1 And it came to pass in the fourth year of Yehoyakim Ben Yoshiyahu (יאשׁיּהוּ) melekh Yehudah, [that] this Dvar came unto YirmeYahu from YHWH (יהוה), saying,
36:2 Take thee megillat sefer (a scroll of book), and write therein all the Devarim that I have spoken unto thee against Yisrael, and against Yehudah, and against all the nations, from the day I spake unto thee, from the days of Yoshiyahu (יאשׁיּהוּ), even unto this day.
36:3 It may be that ha bayit Yehudah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do unto them; that they may return every man from his evil way; that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.
36:4 Then YirmeYahu called Baruch Ben Neryah: and Baruch wrote from the mouth of YirmeYahu all the Divrei YHWH (יהוה), which he had spoken unto him, upon megillat sefer (a scroll of book).
36:5 And YirmeYahu commanded Baruch, saying, I [am] shut up; I cannot go into ha bayit YHWH (יהוה):
36:6 Therefore go thou, and read in the megillah, which thou hast written from my mouth, the Divrei YHWH (יהוה) in the ears of the people in YHWH (יהוה)'S house upon ha Yom Tzom (fasting): and also thou shalt read them in the ears of all Yehudah that come out of their cities.
36:7 It may be they will present their supplication before YHWH (יהוה), and will return every one from his evil way: for great [is] the anger and the fury that YHWH (יהוה) hath pronounced against this people.
36:8 And Baruch Ben Neryah did according to all that YirmeYahu ha Navi commanded him, reading in the sefer the Divrei YHWH (יהוה) in YHWH (יהוה)'S house.
36:9 And it came to pass in the fifth year of Yehoyakim Ben Yoshiyahu (יאשׁיּהוּ) melekh Yehudah, in the ninth (Kislev) month, [that] they proclaimed a tzom (fast) before YHWH (יהוה) to all the people in Yerushalayim, and to all the people that came from the cities of Yehudah unto Yerushalayim.
36:10 Then read Baruch in the sefer the Divrei YirmeYahu in ha bayit YHWH (יהוה), in the chamber of Gemaryah Ben Shafan ha sofer, in the higher Khatzer (courtyard), at the entry of the new gate of YHWH (יהוה)'S house, in the ears of all the people.
36:11 When Mikayah Ben Gemaryah, Ben Shafan, had heard out ha sefer all the Divrei YHWH (יהוה),
36:12 Then he went down into ha melekh's bayit, into the sopher's chamber: and, hinnei, all the sarim sat there, [even] Eli'shama ha sofer (scribe), and D'layah Ben Shemayah, and Elnatan Ben Achbor, and Gemaryah Ben Shafan, and Tzidkiyah Ben Chananyahu (חנניהוּ), and all the sarim.
36:13 Then Mikayah declared unto them all the Devarim that he had heard, when Baruch read ha sefer in the ears of the people.
36:14 Therefore all the sarim sent Yehudi Ben Netanyah, Ben Shelemyah, Ben Kushi, unto Baruch, saying:
Take in thine hand the megillah wherein thou hast read in the ears of the people, and come. So Baruch Ben Neryah took the megillah in his hand, and came unto them.
36:15 And they said unto him, Sit down now, and read it in our ears. So Baruch read [it] in their ears.
36:16 Now it came to pass, when they had heard all the Devarim, they were afraid both one and other, and said unto Baruch, We will surely tell melekh all these Devarim.
36:17 And they asked Baruch, saying, Tell us now, How didst thou write all these Devarim at his mouth?
36:18 Then Baruch answered them, He pronounced all these Devarim unto me with His mouth, and I wrote [them] with ink in ha sefer.
36:19 Then said the sarim unto Baruch, Go, hide thee, thou and YirmeYahu; and let no man know where ye be.
36:20 And they went in to ha melekh into the Khatzer (courtyard), but they laid up the megillah in the chamber of Eli'shama ha sofer, and told all the Devarim in the ears of ha melekh.
36:21 So ha melekh sent Yehudi to fetch the megillah: and he took it out of Eli'shama ha sofer's chamber. And Yehudi read it in the ears of ha melekh, and in the ears of all the sarim which stood beside ha melekh.
36:22 Now ha melekh sat in ha Khoref (winterhouse) in the ninth (Kislev) month: and [there was an akh fireplace] burning before him.
36:23 And it came to pass, [that] when Yehudi had read three or four delatot (columns), he cut it with a ta'ar ha sofer (razor of a sofer), and cast [it] into the eish (fire) that [was] in the akh (fireplace), until all the megillah was consumed in the fire that [was] in the akh (fireplace).
36:24 Yet they were not afraid, nor rent their garments, [neither] ha melekh, nor any of his avadim that heard all these Devarim.
36:25 Nevertheless Elnatan and Delayah and Gemaryah had made intercession to ha melekh that he would not burn the megillah: but he would not hear them.
36:26 But ha melekh commanded Yerahmeel the king's son, and Serayah Ben Azriel, and Shelemyah Ben Abdeel, to take Baruch ha sofer and YirmeYahu ha Navi: but YHWH (יהוה) hid them.
36:27 Then Dvar YHWH (יהוה) came to YirmeYahu, after that ha melekh had burned the megillah, and the Devarim which Baruch wrote at the mouth of YirmeYahu, saying,
36:28 Take thee again another megillah, and write in it all the former Devarim that were in the first megillah, which Yehoyakim melekh Yehudah hath burned.
36:29 And thou shalt say to Yehoyakim melekh Yehudah, Thus saith YHWH (יהוה); Thou hast burned this megillah, saying, Why hast thou written therein, saying, melekh Bavel shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall cause to cease from thence man and beast?
36:30 Therefore thus saith YHWH (יהוה) of Yehoyakim melekh Yehudah; He shall have none to sit upon the throne of David: and his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost.
36:31 And I will punish him and his seed and his avadim for their iniquity; and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Yerushalayim, and upon the men of Yehudah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them; but they listened not.
36:32 Then took YirmeYahu another megillah, and gave it to Baruch Ben Neryah ha sofer; who wrote therein from the mouth of YirmeYahu all the Divrei the sefer which Yehoyakim melekh Yehudah had burned in the fire: and there were added besides unto them many like Devarim.
