Vatisa (נשׂא) kol-ha'edah (עֵדָה), vayitenu (נתן) et-kolam(קוֹל); vayivku ha'am balailah (לַיְלָה) hahu.
And all the congregation lifted up their voices, and cried; and the people wept that night.
14:2 And all benai Yisrael murmured against Moshe and against Aharon: and the whole congregation said to them, Would Elohim (אלהים) that we had died in the land of Mitzrayim! or would Elohim (אלהים) we had died in this wilderness!
Why is ADONAI (יהוה) bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword?
Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Mitzrayim?"
14:4 And they said to one another, "Let us choose a leader and go back to Mitzrayim."
14:5 Then Moshe and Aharon fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of benai Yisrael.
Yehoshua (of Ephraim) and Kalev (of Yehudah) Attempt to Strengthen the People’s Faith;
The People Attempt to Stone Them;
The Glory of ADONAI
14:6 And Yehoshua Ben Nun, and Kalev (כּלב) Ben Yefuneh, [which were] of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:
14:7 And they spoke to all the company of benai Yisrael, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, [is] an exceeding good land.
14:8(iii) If ADONAI (יהוה) delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which flows with milk and honey.
14:9 Only do not rebel against ADONAI (יהוה). And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and ADONAI (יהוה) is with us; do not fear them."
14:10But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of ADONAI (יהוה) appeared in the Ohel Moed before all benai Yisrael.
14:11 And ADONAI (יהוה) said to Moshe:
"How long will these people reject Me? And how long will they not believe Me, with all the signs which I have performed among them?
14:12 אכנו בדבר ואורשׁנו וְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה אתך לגוי־גדול ועצום ממנו׃
Akenu vadever veorishenu ve.e.eseh otekha legoi-gadol veatzum mimenu:
I will strike them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they."
14:13 But Moshe said to ADONAI (יהוה), "Then the Mitzrayim will hear of it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them,
14:14 and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that You, ADONAI (יהוה), are among these people; that You, ADONAI (יהוה), are seen face to face and Your cloud stands above them, and You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.
14:15 And if You shall destroy this nation as one man; then all the nations that have heard Your Name shall speak, saying,
14:16 Because ADONAI (יהוה) was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware to them, therefore he has shachat (slaughtered) them in the wilderness.
And now, please let the power of ADONAI (אדני) be great as you have promised, saying,
14:18 The ADONAI (יהוה) [is] slow to anger, and of rev chesed, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing [the guilty], visiting the iniquity of the avot upon the children to the third and fourth [generation].
14:19 Pardon the iniquity of this people, I pray, according to the greatness of Your mercy, just as You have forgiven this people, from Mitzrayim even until now."
14:20 Then ADONAI (יהוה) said, "I have pardoned, according to your word.
14:21 But [as] truly [as] I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of ADONAI (יהוה).
14:22 none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Mitzrayim and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ten times and have not obeyed my voice,
14:23 Surely they shall not see the land which I sware to their avot, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:
14:24 But my servant Kalev (כּלב), because he had another spirit with him, and has followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.
14:25 (Now the Amalekites and the Kenaaniy dwelt in the valley.) tomorrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Yam Suf.
14:26 (iv) And ADONAI (יהוה) spoke to Moshe and to Aharon, saying:
14:27 How long [shall I bear with] this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the telunah (murmurings) of benai Yisrael, which they murmur against me.
14:28 Say to them, [As truly as] I live, said ADONAI (יהוה), as you have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:
14:29 Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me,
14:30 Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Kalev (כּלב) Ben Yefuneh, and Yehoshua Ben Nun.
14:31 As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected.
14:32 But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.
14:33 And your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years and shall suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness.
14:34 After the number of the days in which you searched the land, [even] forty days, each day for a year, shall you bear your iniquities, [even] forty years, and you shall know my breach of promise.
14:35 I ADONAI (יהוה) have said, I will surely do it to all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.
14:36 And the men, which Moshe sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land,
14:37 Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before ADONAI (יהוה).
14:38 But Yehoshua Ben Nun, and Kalev (כּלב) Ben Yefunneh, [which were] of the men that went to search the land, lived [still].
14:39 And Moshe told these sayings to all benai Yisrael: and the people mourned greatly.
14:40 And they rose early in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, "Here we are, and we will go up to the place which ADONAI (יהוה) has promised, for we have sinned!"
14:41 And Moshe said, "Now why do you transgress the command of ADONAI (יהוה)? For this will not succeed.
14:42 Go not up, for ADONAI (יהוה) [is] not among you; that you be not smitten before your enemies.
14:43 For the Amalekites and the Kenaaniy [are] there before you, and you shall fall by the sword: because you are turned away from ADONAI (יהוה), therefore ADONAI (יהוה) will not be with you.
14:44 But they presumed to go up to the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of ADONAI (יהוה), and Moshe, departed not out of the camp.
14:45 Then the Amalekites came down, and the Kena'ani which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, [even] to Hormah.
