Treatment of Debtors and Slaves

15:1 (vi) Free the Debtors

At the end of [every] seven years you shall make a shemittah (שׁמטּה release).

15:2 And this [is] the manner of the shemitah (release): Every creditor that lends [ought] to his neighbour shall shemittah (release) [it]; he shall not exact [it] of his neighbour, or of his brother; because it is called ADONAI 'S shemittah (release).

15:3 Of a foreigner you may exact [it again]: but [that] which is your with achicha (thy brother) your hand shall shemittah (release);

15:4 Save when there shall be no poor among you; for ADONAI (יהוה) shall greatly bless you in the eretz which ADONAI  Eloheicha gives you [for] an nachalah (inheritance) to yaresh (possess ירשׁ) it:

15:5 Only if you carefully shema to the voice of ADONAI  Eloheicha, to shomer to do all these mitzvot which I command you this day.

15:6 For ADONAI  Eloheicha blesses you, as he promised you and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow; and you shall reign over many nations, but they shall not reign over you.

15:7 If there be among you a poor man of one of your brethren within any of your she'arim (gates) in your eretz which ADONAI  Eloheicha gives you, you shall not harden your lev, nor shut your hand from your poor brother:

15:8 But you shall open your hand wide to him, and shall surely lend him sufficient for his need, [in that] which he wants.

15:9 Beware that there be not a yought in your wicked lev, saying, The seventh year, the year of shemittah (release), is at hand; and your eye be evil against your poor brother, and you givest him nought; and he cry to ADONAI (יהוה) against you, and it be sin to you.

15:10 you shall surely give him, and your lev shall not be grieved when you givest to him: because that for this thing ADONAI  Eloheicha shall bless you in all your works, and in all that you puttest your hand to.

15:11 For the poor shall never cease out of the eretz: therefore I command you, saying, you shall open your hand wide to achicha (thy brother), to your poor, and to your needy, in your eretz.

15:12 [And] if achicha (thy brother), an Hebrew man, or an Hebrew woman, be sold to you, and serve you six years; then in the seventh year you shall let him go free from you.

15:13 And when you sendest him out free from you, you shall not let him go away empty:

15:14 you shall furnish him liberally out of your flock, and out of your floor, and out of your winepress: [of that] wherewith ADONAI  Eloheicha hath blessed you you shall give to him.

15:15 And you shall remember that you wast a bondman in the eretz Mitzrayim, and ADONAI  Eloheicha redeemed you therefore I command you this thing to day.

15:16 And it shall be, if he say to you, I will not go away from you; because he lovs you and your bayit, because he is well with you;

15:17 Then you shall take an aul, and thrust [it] through his ear to the door, and he shall be your eved forever. And also to your amah (maidservant) you shall do likewise.

15:18 It shall not seem hard to you, when you sendest him away free from you; for he hath been worth a double hired eved [to thee], in serving you six years: and ADONAI  Eloheicha shall bless you in all that you doest.

15:19 (vii) Sanctify the Firstborns

All the firstling males that come of your herd and of your flock you shall sanctify to ADONAI  Eloheicha: you shall do no melachah (work) with the firstling of your bullock, nor shear the firstling of your sheep.

15:20 you shall eat [it] before ADONAI  Eloheicha year by year in the place which ADONAI (יהוה) shall choose, you and your household.

15:21 And if there be [any] blemish therein, [as if it be] lame, or blind, [or have] any ill blemish, you shall not zevach it to ADONAI  Eloheicha.

15:22 you shall eat it within your she'arim: tamei ve tahor [person shall eat it] alike, as the gazelle, and as the deer.

15:23 Only you shall not eat the blood thereof; you shall pour it upon the ground as mayim.
