Parashah 15: Bo (Go) 10:1-13:16

7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12,

Vayomer ADONAI elMoshe:

"Bo el-Paroh ki-ANI hikhbadti et-liboveet-lev avadav lemaan shiti ototai eleh bekirbo:

And ADONAI (יהוה) said to Moshe:

"Go in to Paroh; for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his servants, that I may show these signs of Mine before him,

Ulemaan tesaper beaznei vinkha uven-binkha et asher hitalalti beMitzrayim veet-ototai asher-samti vam vidatem ki-ANI ADONAI:

and that you may tell in the hearing of your son and your son's son about how I made a mockery of the Mitzrayim, and My signs which I have done among them, that you may know that ANI ADONAI (יהוה)."

10:3 And Moshe and Aharon came in to Paroh, and said to him:

Thus says ADONAI (יהוה) Elohei haIvrim:

'How long will you refuse to humble yourself before Me?'

Let My people go, that they may serve Me.

10:4 Or else, if you refuse to let My people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring the arbeh (locusts, אבה) into your territory:

10:5 And they shall cover the face of the earth, so that no one will be able to see the earth; and they shall eat the residue of what is left, which remains to you from the hail, and they shall eat every tree which grows up for you out of the field.

10:6 They shall fill your houses, the houses of all your servants, and the houses of all the Mitzrayim—which neither your fathers nor your fathers' fathers have seen, since the day that they were on the earth to this day.' "

10:7 And Paroh's servants said to him:

"How long shall this man be a snare to us?

Let the men go, that they may serve ADONAI (יהוה) Eloheihem:

Do you not yet know that Mitzrayim is ruined?

10:8 And Moshe and Aharon were brought again to Paroh: and he said to them:

"Go, serve ADONAI (יהוה) Eloheichem: but who are the ones that are going?"

10:9 And Moshe said:

"We will go with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and our herds we will go; for we must hold a feast to ADONAI (יהוה)."

10:10 And he said to them:

"Let ADONAI (יהוה) be so with you, as I will let you go, and your little ones:

See  you have some ra'ah (evil) purpose in mind.

10:11 Not so: Go now, the men among you, and serve ADONAI (יהוה); for that is what you did desire. And they were driven out from Paroh's presence.

10:12 (ii) And ADONAI (יהוה) said to Moshe:

"Stretch out your hand over the land of Mitzrayim for the arbeh (locusts, אבה), that they may come up upon the land of Mitzrayim, and eat every herb of the land, even all that the hail has left.

10:13 And Moshe stretched forth his rod over the land of Mitzrayim, and ADONAI (יהוה) brought an east wind upon the land all that day, and all that night; and when it was morning, the east wind brought the arbeh (locusts, אבה).

10:14 And the arbeh (locusts, אבה) went up over all the land of Mitzrayim, and rested in all the coasts of Mitzrayim: very grievous [were they]; before them there were no such arbeh (locusts, אבה) as they, neither after them shall be such.

10:15 For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they did eat every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left: and there remained not any green thing in the trees, or in the herbs of the field, through all the land of Mitzrayim.

10:16 Then Paroh called for Moshe and Aharon in haste; and he said, I have sinned against ADONAI (יהוה) Eloheichem, and against you.

10:17 Now therefore forgive, I pray you, my sin only this once, and intreat ADONAI (יהוה) Eloheichem, that he may take away from me this death only.

10:18 And he went out from Paroh, and intreated ADONAI (יהוה).

10:19 And ADONAI (יהוה) turned a mighty strong west wind, which took away the arbeh (locusts, אבה), and cast them into the Yam Suf; there remained not one locust in all the coasts of Mitzrayim.

10:20 But ADONAI (יהוה) hardened Paroh's heart, so that he would not let the children of Yisrael go.

Three Days of Darkness

10:21clipbrd.gif And ADONAI (יהוה) said to Moshe:

"Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Mitzrayim, even darkness which may even be felt."

10:22 And Moshe stretched out his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Mitzrayim three days:

10:23 They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days:

but all the children of Yisrael had light in their dwellings.

10:24 (iii)

And Paroh called to Moshe, and said:

"Go you, serve ADONAI (יהוה); only let your flocks and your herds be stayed: let your little ones also go with you."

10:25 And Moshe said:

"You must give us also sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice to ADONAI (יהוה) Eloheinu.

10:26 Our cattle also shall go with us; there shall not a hoof be left behind; for thereof must we take to serve ADONAI (יהוה) Eloheinu; and we know not with what we must serve ADONAI (יהוה), until we arrive there.

10:27 But ADONAI (יהוה) hardened Paroh's heart, and he would not let them go.

10:28 And Paroh said to him:

Get away from me! Take heed to yourself and see my face no more! For in that day you see my face you shall die!"

10:29 And Moshe said, "Let it be as you have said: I will see your face no more."

I made a mockery - 10:2 - [RASHI] Heb. הִתְעַלַלְתִּי, I mocked, like “Because you mocked (הִתְעַלַלְתִּי) me” (Num. 22:29); “Will it not be just as He mocked (הִתְעַלֵל) them” (Shemuel Alef 6:6), stated in regard to Mitzrayim. It is not an expression meaning a “deed and acts (מַעִלָלִים),” however, for were that so, He would have written עוֹלַלְתִּי, like “and deal (וְעוֹלֵל) with them as You have dealt (עוֹלַלְתָּ) with me” (Lam. 1:22); “which has been dealt (עוֹלֵל) to me” (Lam. 1:12).

to humble yourself:10:3 [RASHI] Heb. לֵעָנֹת, as the Targum [Onkelos] renders, לְאִתְכְּנָעָא, and it is derived from עָנִי. You have refused to be humble and meek before Me.

Locust (Gryllus migratorius), Heb. ARBeH - Arbeh occurs (Shemot 10:4-19) in the account of the plague of locusts; in the phrase "as locusts for multitude" (Jdg 6:5; 7:12); "more than the locusts .... innumerable" (Jer 46:23); "The locusts have no king.

Locusts are instruments of the wrath of Elohim (Ex 10:4-19; Dt 28:38,42; 2 Ch 7:13; Ps 78:46; 105:34; Nah 3:15-17; The Wisdom of Shlomo 16:9; Rev 9:3); they typify an invading army (Jer 51:14,27); they are compared with horses (Joel 2:4; Rev 9:7); in Job 39:20

The Israeli cookbook includes directions on how to prepare locusts: “Heat the oven and when very hot, switch it off. Put the locusts in the hot oven and leave for half a day. Locusts are “prepared by being slightly roasted, dried in the sun and salted.” It also notes that in addition to the head, wings and legs, the intestines are often removed and “only the fleshy portion is eaten”
