As the deer pants after the water brooks, so pants my soul after Thee, O Elohim (אלהים).
Tzamah nafshi leElohim leEL Chai matai avove veerah penei Elohim:
My soul thirsts for Elohim (אלהים), for the living EL: when shall I come and appear before Elohim (אלהים)?
42:4 My tears have been my lechem yomam valailah (food day n night), while they continually say to me, Where [is] Eloheicha?
42:5 When I remember these [things], I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the Beit Elohim (אלהים), with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept set apart day.
42:6 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and [why] art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in Elohim (אלהים): for I shall yet praise him [for] the help of His countenance.
42:7 O Elohai, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Yarden, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mi-zar.
42:8 Deep calleth to deep at the noise of Thy waterspouts: all Thy waves and Thy billows are gone over me.
42:9 [Yet] YHWH (יהוה) will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night His song [shall be] with me, [and] my tefillah to the EL Chaiyai (life).
42:10 I will say to EL my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
42:11[As] with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily to me, Where [is] Eloheicha?
42:12 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope Thou in Elohim (אלהים): for I shall yet praise him, [who is] the health of my countenance, and Elohai.

Apparently Tehillim 42:1-11 and Tehillim 43:1-5 belonged together at one time, many Hebrew manuscripts having them as one Tehillim. This is evident from the fact that the refrain is repeated twice in Tehillim 42:1-11 (Tehillim 42:5, Tehillim 42:11) and at the end of Tehillim 43:1-5 (Tehillim 43:5). Tehillim 42:1-11 was the expression of the psalmist’s yearning for Elohim, and Tehillim 43:1-5 was his praise at the prospect of full fellowship with Elohim.
The deer longs; The deer faint with thirst, long for the distant brooks of water which it hears but cannot reach.So too does an exiled Yisrael call longingly to Elohim whom it knows to be above but who at the moment seems to be distant.
