Preparation 1:12- 2:24
2:1
And Yehoshua (יהושׁוּע) Ben Nun sent out two men secretly from Shittim
as spies, saying, "Go view the land, especially Yericho
(יריחה)". And they
went, and came into the house of a harlot
named Rahav, and lodged
there.
2:2
And it was told the king of Yericho (יריחה), saying, "Behold, men have
come here tonight from Benai Yisrael to search
out the country."
2:3
Then
the king of Yericho (יריחה) sent to Rahav, saying, "Bring out
the men who have come to you, who entered your house, for they have come to
search out all the land"
2:4
Then the woman took the two men and hid them. So she said, "Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from.
2:5
And it happened as the gate was being shut, when it was dark, that the men
went out. Where the men went I do not know; pursue them quickly, for you may
overtake them."
2:6
But she had brought them up to the roof and hid them with the stalks of flax that she had laid in order on the roof.
2:7
So the men pursued after them on the way to the Yarden as far as the fords. And the gate was shut as soon as the pursuers had gone out.
2:8
Before the men lay down, she came up to them on the roof
2:9
and said to the men, "I know that ADONAI (יהוה) has given you the land,
and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of
the land melt away before you.
2:10
For we have heard how ADONAI (יהוה) dried up the water of Yam Suf before you
when you came out of Mitzrayim and what you did
to the two melachim of the Emori, that were beyond the Yarden, Sichon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed.
2:11
And as soon as we heard these things, our hearts melted; neither did there
remain any more courage in anyone because of you, for ADONAI (יהוה) Eloheichem, Hu Elohim (אלהים) in heaven
above and on earth beneath.
2:12
Now therefore, please swear to me by ADONAI (יהוה), since
I have dealt kindly with you, that you also will deal kindly with my father's
household, and give me a pledge of truth,
2:13
And save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all they
have, and deliver us from death.
2:14
And the men answered her, "Our lives for yours! If you do not tell this
business of ours, then when ADONAI (יהוה) gives us the land we will deal kindly
and faithful with you.
2:15
Vatoridem bachevel bad hachalon ki veitah bekirha chomah uvachomah
hi yoshavet:
Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for
her house [was] upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the
wall.
2:16
And she said to them, "Get to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you. Hide there three days, until the pursuers have returned. Afterward you may go your way."
2:17
And the men said to her: "We will be blameless of this shevu'ah (oath)
of yours which you have made us swear.
2:18
Behold, when we come into the land, you shall bind this scarlet
thread in the window through which you let us down, and you shall bring
your father and mother, your brothers, and all your father's household into
your house.
2:19
And if anyone goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless; but if a hand is laid upon anyone who is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head.
2:20
But if you tell this business of ours, we shall be guiltless of your shevu'ah (oath) which you made us swear.2:21
Vatomer: Kedivreichem ken-hu, vateshalchem vayelechu, vatikshor et-tikvat hashani bachalon:
And she said, According to your words,
so be it And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the
scarlet line in the window.
2:22
They departed and went to the mountain, and stayed there three days until the
pursuers returned. The pursuers sought them all along the way, but did not find
them.
2:23
So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain,
and crossed over, and came to Yehoshua (יהושׁוּע) Ben Nun, and told
him all that had befallen them.
2:24
And they said to Yehoshua (יהושׁוּע):
Truly ADONAI (יהוה) has
delivered all the land into our hands, for indeed all the inhabitants of the
country are fainthearted of us.
